Pros and cons of being a graphic designer.

29 Aug

It seems like literally everybody is interested in design. Young people prefer this field to anything else. And deciding between different professions they choose design. It could be web design, design of interiors and of course graphic design. For many people it seems like to be a designer is cool. You ostensibly communicate with cool people, visit cool places and your life is cool. Well, it depends. If you have decided to become a graphic designer then you should realize that the sphere is quite competitive. It means that there are lots of graphic designers. Mostly they are talented and widely recognized as professionals. So you have to work hard to attract one’s attention.

Graphic design is supposedly about creativity. Well, it is partly true. The point is that your work depends on clients’ needs. They dictate you what to do. Sometimes you have to change your initial sketch several times to satisfy one’s requirements.

In case you do not want to depend on your employer you may work as a freelancer. On the one hand you do what you want to do expressing your ideas in a way you like. On the other hand your situation is pretty unstable. I mean you may spend a long period of time without work. And it is really terrible. If you are a freelancer it means that you have to force yourself to work on the project. So learn to be industrious working at home.

Also you should remember that graphic design is about interacting with other people. You should understand what someone expects from you. Well, it is wonderful indeed you have a chance to express your ideas. But you should be very attentive to the needs of your clients. It is a must.

For the first time you may do really boring things that have nothing in common with creativity. I mean you could be ordered to accomplish a project you are not interested in. Moreover there are too many constraints. By the way at the very beginning you could hardly make much money. Even though graphic design deals with creativity nevertheless your work could be pretty monotonous and uninteresting. It could be pretty stressful as well. Especially when you have to deliver your project as soon as possible. You should take into account this fact as well.

So think it over before becoming a graphic designer. Despite its cons graphic design is still popular.

Great post. I wish I’d read it twenty years ago when I dropped out of engineering to become a designer. It was rough in the beginning, to get established and I often wondered if I should have stuck with engineering. Part of me still does! I suppose my soul thanks me for it… but it sure would have been nice to have a more realistic perspective of what awaits a graphic designer. Ah the naiveté of youth….

Hello, thank you for paying attention to this post, I actually agree that it is always better to find something which is closer to real world as a profession because unfortunately we all live in a material world. And whatever happens happens:)
